Histology Technician


General Description



Independently prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist or investigator. This individual will participate in all aspects of the reference histology laboratory and is capable of independently preparing, staining, and coverslipping both frozen and paraffin embedded tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist or investigator. Performs preventative maintenance on microtomes, automatic stainer, coverslipper and other equipment as specified. Responsible for maintaining documentation of daily work, QC/QA issues as per regulations.
Performs other duties including maintaining and programming tissue processors, routine and special staining, preparation of all staining solutions, knowledge of microwave staining techniques, decalcification of bone specimens, programming and operation of automatic staining equipment, slide and cassette printers.

Can interpret detailed instructions for specific research protocols. May involve significant skill and understanding of research parameters to maintain standards required for research protocols. Capable of interacting with investigators and offer technical advice for scientific methods. Independently performs, troubleshoots and understands the scientific rationale of frozen sectioning, immunoperoxidase, immmunofluorescence and microwave techniques. Reads and understands written standard operating procedures. Understands and applies scientific theory in reproducibility of results. Must be able to interpret and assimilate scientific literature within the discipline.

Attention to detail is critical and daily fluctuation of workload is extreme. Required attendance employee, may be required to work additional hours due to workload or staffing issues.  

Requirements



 

Requires an AA degree in histology or Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field with some histology coursework/work experience. High school degree/GED with 2 years histology laboratory experience may substitute.

Demonstrated ability in the operation of microtomes, tissue processors, automatic stainers, balances, tissue embedders, water baths, ovens, pH meter, microscope, automatic coverslippers, computers, printers and other related equipment. Knowledge of preventive maintenance of all laboratory equipment. Computer competency a must. Work produced is subject to precise measure of quantity and quality; Attention to detail is critical to the successful performance of this job as it directly affects patient diagnoses or research outcomes.
